The $2.8 Billion Economy Hiding in Plain Sight

$2.8 billion. No press conference. No victory lap. That’s what Ugandans working abroad sent home in the past 12 months up from $1.9 billion the year before.

Read that again. Almost a billion dollars of growth in a single year.

For perspective: that’s more than we earned from tourism. It rivals our biggest export lines. If remittances were a company, we’d be studying it in business school.

Behind those numbers are people who wake up in London, Dubai, Boston, Toronto and across the world still thinking about home. People who want to own a piece of Uganda’s growth — property, businesses, financial products — not just fund it from a distance.

Is it possible to grow this to over 10% of country’s GDP from the current 5%? Absolutely yes!

What holds them back is rarely capital, and never intent. It’s trust. Too many have been burned by a plot that was sold twice, a project that stalled, a relative who “managed” the money.

So the opportunity is sitting in plain sight: whoever builds credible bridges for diaspora investors — real transparency, real protection, professional management — will unlock one of the most patient, most loyal pools of capital this economy has.

The question we keep sitting with: who is actually building for them?

If you’re in the diaspora, we would genuinely love to hear it — what would make you invest back home with full confidence?
